Chromium Picolinate vs Chromium Chloride: What the Form Means
Chromium picolinate vs chromium chloride is a question about the form of one mineral. Glyco Defender lists chromium as picolinate, 7 mcg per mL, which is 20% of the Daily Value. Most diabetes trials in a 2019 review used picolinate, but no source we read compares the forms head to head, so no form can be called better.

The forms01
What is the difference between chromium picolinate and chromium chloride?
Chromium picolinate vs chromium chloride is a difference in what the chromium is bound to. Picolinate pairs the mineral with picolinic acid, and chloride pairs it with chlorine.
The mineral inside is the same. The partner molecule is what changes the name on the label.
Other forms exist too. Chromium nicotinate is bound to niacin, and some products use chromium from yeast. Multivitamins often print chloride, while stand-alone chromium tablets often print picolinate.
The partner molecule is not an extra nutrient you can count. Only the elemental chromium counts toward the Daily Value, so a label states micrograms of chromium, not micrograms of the whole compound.
The research02
Which chromium form do the diabetes studies use?
Most trials in a 2019 review of people with diabetes used chromium picolinate, at doses from 1.28 to 1,000 mcg a day (NIH ODS, Chromium). The review found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C of unclear clinical meaning.
A 2016 review found chromium did not help healthy people moderate glucose (NIH ODS, Chromium). The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health calls the evidence for chromium weak (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).
So the form matters less than it sounds. The studies show what was tested, not that picolinate beats chloride. The table shows which forms exist and which one is on our label.
| Form | Bound to | In Glyco Defender? |
|---|---|---|
| Picolinate | Picolinic acid | Yes, 7 mcg per mL |
| Chloride | Chlorine | No |
| Nicotinate | Niacin | No |
| Yeast-based | Yeast cells | No |

How much chromium picolinate is in Glyco Defender?
Each 1 mL serving of Glyco Defender holds 7 mcg of chromium as chromium picolinate, which is 20% of the 35 mcg Daily Value (NIH ODS, Chromium). One 30 mL bottle holds 210 mcg across 30 servings.
The adult Adequate Intake runs from 20 to 35 mcg a day, depending on sex and age (NIH ODS, Chromium). The drops therefore cover a fifth of the Daily Value, not the whole amount.
The 7 mcg is far below the dose range in the diabetes trials. A trial result on 200 mcg or more says little about 7 mcg, so we do not carry one over to the other.
Chromium may add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, which raises the risk of low blood sugar. It may also reduce levothyroxine absorption (NIH ODS, Chromium). Keep taking prescribed medicine and tell your doctor or pharmacist about any supplement.

How do you compare chromium forms on any supplement label?
Compare chromium forms by reading four things in order: the form in brackets, the micrograms, the percent Daily Value and the serving size.
Use the same four steps on any bottle, ours included. They take about a minute.
Find the bracket
Look for the words after "as". They name the form: picolinate, chloride, nicotinate or yeast.
Read the micrograms
Chromium is measured in mcg, not mg. One mg is 1,000 mcg, so a number like 200 means mcg.
Compare to 35 mcg
Divide the amount by 35. Seven mcg gives 0.2, or 20%.
Check the serving
Our serving is one 1 mL dropperful. A tablet product may ask for two.

Which Glyco Defender pack gives the most chromium for the price?
Every bottle holds the same 7 mcg per serving, so the 6-bottle pack gives the lowest cost per day at about $1.63. Chromium alone is not a reason to buy; it is one line of 22.
Buying more bottles does not raise the amount per serving. It only lowers the price per day. A supplement sits beside food and habits, and results are personal and uncertain.

Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you use insulin, a sulfonylurea or another glucose-lowering drug, a blood thinner, blood pressure or heart-rhythm medicine, an antidepressant or thyroid medicine. Chromium, gymnema and ginseng may add to diabetes medicines and cause lows; guarana and green tea add caffeine. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
FAQ06
Glyco Defender questions people ask
Is chromium picolinate absorbed better than other chromium forms?
None of the sources we read compares absorption between chromium forms, so we cannot say. The NIH summary notes that most diabetes trials used picolinate. That tells you what was tested, not which form wins, so treat claims of a better form with care.
What is chromium nicotinate and is it the same as picolinate?
Chromium nicotinate pairs chromium with niacin, so it is a different form and a different compound from picolinate. Glyco Defender does not list it. The label names chromium as picolinate only, at 7 mcg per 1 mL serving.
How many mcg of chromium are in a whole bottle of Glyco Defender?
One 30 mL bottle holds 210 mcg of chromium in total. Each 1 mL serving has 7 mcg, and the bottle has 30 servings. At one dropperful a day, a bottle is a 30-day supply.
Does chromium chloride count toward the Daily Value the same way?
Yes, the Daily Value counts elemental chromium whatever the form. The Daily Value is 35 mcg. A label that says 35 mcg of chromium gives 100% either way, so compare the micrograms of chromium, not the compound name.
