Gymnema in Glyco Defender: Gymnema Sylvestre at 8th of 21, Next to the Studies
Gymnema in Glyco Defender is Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract, listed 8th of 21 in the 15.47 mg blend, so one dropper holds at most about 1.9 mg. Studies used 200-400 mg a day and found a small fasting glucose effect. Its best-known action, dulling sweet taste, has not been tested at a dose this small.

On the label01
How much gymnema is in Glyco Defender?
The label gives no gymnema amount, but its 8th place in a 15.47 mg blend caps it at about 1.9 mg per dropper.
The math is short. Blend items run from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). So the 8th item can weigh no more than 15.47 / 8, or 1.93 mg.
An even split across all 21 gives about 0.74 mg. The real figure is hidden, and it could sit anywhere at or below the ceiling.

The plant02
What is gymnema sylvestre?
Gymnema sylvestre is a climbing plant whose leaf has long been used in Ayurvedic practice, where it goes by the name gurmar.
The label lists it as "Gymnema Sylvestre Leaf Extract" with a caret. The caret means a 20:1 extract: about 20 parts of raw leaf went into one part of concentrate. It does not make the dose 20 times bigger.
No gymnema photo was supplied by the brand. The image at the top is a crop of the blend text on the label.
Dose check03
What gymnema dose did studies use?
Most gymnema studies used 200-400 mg a day of extract standardized to 25% gymnemic acids; some used 500-1,000 mg of leaf extract.
Set the 1.9 mg ceiling against 200 mg and it lands near 1% of the low end. The even split, 0.74 mg, is under 0.4%.
| Amount | Gymnema per day |
|---|---|
| Even split, one dropper | About 0.74 mg |
| Label-order ceiling, one dropper | About 1.9 mg |
| Standardized extract in studies | 200-400 mg |
| Leaf extract in other trials | 500-1,000 mg |
Sweet taste04
Does gymnema for sugar cravings really work?
Gymnema for sugar cravings rests on one known effect: at studied doses it dulls the taste of sweet foods.
That effect is the reason the sales page says the drops help "tame everyday cravings". But gymnema research used 200 mg a day or more (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). Nobody has tested whether 1.9 mg or less does anything to taste or appetite.
If sweets taste different after one dropper, that would be a surprise at this dose. Plan habits like portions and walks rather than counting on the blend.
Evidence05
What does research say about gymnema and blood sugar?
Research on gymnema and blood sugar is thin: a 2021 review of 10 small studies found a fasting glucose drop that was real on paper but small in practice.
Robust clinical trials are still missing (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). According to NCCIH, no reliable evidence shows that any herbal supplement helps control diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).
The sales page quotes gymnema studies. Those tested the herb alone, at full doses, not these drops. Our read of the claims is on claims vs evidence.

Is gymnema safe with diabetes medicine?
Gymnema may add to diabetes medicines, so anyone on insulin or a sulfonylurea should ask a doctor before taking it.
One case report links gymnema to a liver injury that cleared after it was stopped (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). That was at much larger doses than one dropper.
Never skip or lower a dose because of a supplement. Read supplements and diabetes medicines for the signs of a low.
Fair view07
Should you choose Glyco Defender for its gymnema?
No. If gymnema is the main reason you are buying, one dropper holds too little to match any studied dose.
The drops make more sense as a simple daily habit with a known chromium dose. That line is covered on chromium picolinate.
- Fair: gymnema is named on the label
- Weak: at most about 1% of a low study dose

FAQ09
Gymnema in Glyco Defender: questions
What is gymnema sylvestre used for?
Gymnema sylvestre is used mostly for its effect on sweet taste and in blood sugar products. At 200-400 mg a day it dulls sweetness, and small studies saw a slight fasting glucose drop. Strong trials are still lacking.
Is gymnema the same as gurmar?
Yes. Gurmar is the traditional Ayurvedic name for Gymnema sylvestre. The Glyco Defender label uses the Latin name and lists the leaf extract 8th of 21 in its blend, at a 20:1 extract ratio.
Is 1.9 mg of gymnema enough to do anything?
Probably not, and nobody has tested it. Studies used 200-400 mg a day, so 1.9 mg is about 1% of the low end. That is the ceiling; the real amount in one dropper may be lower.
Can gymnema hurt your liver?
It is rare. One published case report describes liver injury linked to gymnema that went away after the person stopped. If you have liver disease, ask your doctor before using any product that contains it.
Can I take gymnema with metformin?
Ask your doctor first. Gymnema may add to diabetes medicines, and the risk of lows is highest with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Keep taking metformin as prescribed and tell your care team about every supplement.
Does gymnema change how food tastes?
At studied doses, yes: sweet foods taste less sweet. Whether the tiny amount in one Glyco Defender dropper does the same is unknown. No test of the drops has measured it.
