Panax Ginseng in Glyco Defender: Blood Sugar Research, Dose Math and Cautions

Quick answer

Panax ginseng is the root extract listed 12th in the Glyco Defender blend, so one 1 mL dropper holds at most about 1.3 mg. Of all the plants in the drops, it has the most blood sugar research: 16 trials found fasting glucose about 5.6 mg/dL lower and no A1C change, at doses from about 100 mg a day.

On the label01

What is Panax ginseng in Glyco Defender?

Panax ginseng, also called Asian or Korean ginseng, is a root used in East Asian tradition for centuries. Glyco Defender lists its root extract as the 12th of 21 blend ingredients.

The label reads "Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) Root Extract" with a caret. The caret points to a footnote: a concentrate with a 20:1 extract equivalent. That ratio describes how the extract was made, not its weight.

Twelfth place puts ginseng in the second half of the list, just after the grapefruit seed line.

Blood sugar02

Does Panax ginseng help blood sugar?

Panax ginseng shows a small effect on fasting blood sugar in pooled trials, but no effect on A1C. Researchers still call the overall picture inconclusive.

A 2014 review pooled 16 randomized trials with 770 people. Ginseng lowered fasting blood glucose by about 0.31 mmol/L, or roughly 5.6 mg/dL. Results varied a lot from study to study. Fasting insulin and A1C did not change in a meaningful way (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).

NCCIH describes the research on Panax ginseng blood sugar effects as conflicting. It also cites a 2022 review of 20 studies that found better fasting glucose and some heart and metabolic markers (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

Even so, NCCIH says research on herbs such as ginseng has not proven them effective for diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

Fasting glucose03

How much does ginseng change fasting glucose?

Ginseng's effect on fasting glucose averaged about 5.6 mg/dL in trials. That is a modest shift, smaller than the gap between most lab ranges.

Picture a fasting reading of 110 mg/dL, in the prediabetes range of 100 to 125 (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). Take away 5.6 and you get about 104: still the same range.

Dose math04

How much Panax ginseng is in one dropper?

One dropper of Glyco Defender holds at most about 1.3 mg of Panax ginseng extract. The label does not print the real figure, so that is the upper limit.

The blend totals 15.47 mg and lists its parts from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). An ingredient in 12th place cannot weigh more than 15.47 divided by 12, or about 1.29 mg. Eleven heavier ingredients sit above it.

The lowest dose in the ginseng trials was about 100 mg a day. That is about 77 times the ceiling. On an even split of 0.74 mg, the gap grows to about 135 times.

Red bars: what one dropper can hold. Chromium is the one amount on the label; for blend ingredients we chart an even split (15.47 mg / 21, about 0.74 mg per mL) and the most the label order allows. Blue bars show daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies; the pale extension marks a range. Even the ceilings sit far under the studied doses.

Which ginseng05

Is Panax ginseng the same as Siberian ginseng?

No. Panax ginseng is a true ginseng. Siberian ginseng, or eleuthero, comes from a different plant and has its own line on the Glyco Defender label.

The genus Panax includes Asian ginseng and American ginseng. The 2014 review pooled trials from across the genus (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014). Glyco Defender names Panax ginseng specifically.

Eleuthero, sold as Siberian ginseng, is not a Panax species. It sits fifth in the blend and is covered on the maca and adaptogens page.

Safety06

Who should be careful with Panax ginseng?

People on diabetes medicines or blood thinners, and anyone pregnant, should be careful with Panax ginseng. Trouble sleeping is the most common side effect.

NCCIH says ginseng might push blood sugar down, so people with diabetes should check with a provider first. It may also interfere with blood clotting and interact with some medicines, and it may be unsafe in pregnancy (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

The ginseng line is tiny. But chromium in the same dropper may also add to diabetes drugs (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not cut or skip insulin, metformin or any other prescription because you started Glyco Defender. Tell your doctor before you begin. Learn the signs of a low: shaking, sweating, hunger, confusion (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). Read supplements and diabetes medicines.

Verdict07

Is the ginseng in Glyco Defender enough to matter?

Probably not. The research is real but modest, and one dropper holds at most a sliver of the lowest dose that trials used.

In its favor

  • 16 randomized trials behind the fasting glucose finding
  • Named clearly as Panax ginseng root extract
  • Well studied for side effects

Against it

  • At most 1.3 mg per mL, far under 100 mg
  • No A1C effect even at trial doses
  • Insomnia and possible drug interactions

Other lines08

Which other Glyco Defender ingredients have blood sugar research?

Besides ginseng, chromium and gymnema have the most blood sugar research. Both show small effects at doses well above what one dropper holds.

FAQ09

Panax ginseng questions

Does ginseng lower fasting glucose?

In pooled trials, a little. A review of 16 randomized trials found fasting glucose about 5.6 mg/dL lower on average, with wide variation and no A1C change. Those trials used about 100 mg to 20 g a day, far more than the 1.3 mg ceiling in one Glyco Defender dropper.

How long does ginseng take to affect blood sugar?

No timeline applies to Glyco Defender, because the drops were never tested. Ginseng trials ran for weeks to months at far higher doses. Track your numbers with your doctor instead of expecting a set change, and judge any shift with a lab A1C, not one meter reading.

Can Panax ginseng keep me awake?

It can. NCCIH lists trouble sleeping as the most common side effect of Asian ginseng. Glyco Defender also holds guarana and green tea, which add caffeine, so a morning dropper is the gentler choice if you sleep lightly or wake often at night.

Can I take Panax ginseng with metformin?

Ask your doctor first. NCCIH says ginseng might push blood sugar down, and people with diabetes should consult a provider before using it. Glyco Defender also holds chromium and gymnema, which may add to diabetes medicines. Keep your metformin on schedule.

Is Panax ginseng safe during pregnancy?

It may not be. NCCIH says Asian ginseng may be unsafe in pregnancy. The Glyco Defender label also rules out pregnant and nursing women and anyone under 18, so the drops are off the table in those cases, whatever the ginseng amount.

Why is ginseng so far down the Glyco Defender list?

The label does not explain it. Blend lines run from most to least by weight, so 12th of 21 makes ginseng one of the smaller shares. No single amounts are published, so the exact ginseng weight per dropper is unknown, though it cannot pass about 1.3 mg.
