Guide
Blood Sugar Numbers: Normal, Prediabetes and Diabetes Ranges for A1C and Fasting Glucose
Blood sugar numbers fall into three NIDDK ranges. Normal is an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL. Prediabetes is 5.7-6.4% or 100-125 mg/dL. The diabetes range starts at 6.5% or 126 mg/dL, confirmed by a repeat test. A supplement such as Glyco Defender drops does not change which range you are in.

The ranges01
What is a normal blood sugar level?
A normal blood sugar level, by the NIDDK cutoffs, is a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL and an A1C below 5.7% (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Glucose is the sugar that moves through your blood and feeds your cells. Insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas, moves it out of the blood and into those cells.
Doctors read that balance with a few lab tests. Each test has its own cutoffs, and each sorts a result into normal, prediabetes or the diabetes range.
Use the finder below to place a number you already have. It reads one value at a time, the way a lab report does.
- NormalA1C below 5.7%Fasting below 100 mg/dL
- PrediabetesA1C 5.7-6.4%Fasting 100-125 mg/dL
- Diabetes rangeA1C 6.5% or higherFasting 126 mg/dL or higher
Type an A1C or a fasting number to see its range. One test is not a diagnosis; a doctor confirms with a repeat test.
Ranges from NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and many do not know it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). A home meter is not a diagnostic test.
Three tests02
What are the A1C ranges, and how do they compare with other tests?
The A1C ranges are below 5.7% for normal, 5.7-6.4% for prediabetes and 6.5% or higher for the diabetes range (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
A1C is a percentage. It shows how much of your hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells, carries glucose. Because red cells live for months, A1C reflects your average over roughly the past three months.
The fasting test is a snapshot of one morning. The 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test, or OGTT, checks how fast your body clears a sweet drink.
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes range |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1C | Below 5.7% | 5.7-6.4% | 6.5% or higher |
| Fasting plasma glucose | Below 100 mg/dL | 100-125 mg/dL | 126 mg/dL or higher |
| 2-hour OGTT | Below 140 mg/dL | 140-199 mg/dL | 200 mg/dL or higher |
Fasting test03
How is fasting glucose measured?
Fasting glucose is measured from a blood draw taken after at least 8 hours with no food or drink other than water, usually first thing in the morning.
The number shows how much glucose sits in your blood when no meal is pushing it up. That makes it a clean baseline.
Small things can nudge it. A late snack, a rough night or an illness can raise a single reading, which is one reason labs repeat the test.
Book a morning slot
An early draw keeps the fast short. Most people simply skip breakfast.
Drink water only
Plain water is fine. Coffee, juice, gum and mints can blur the result.
Ask about your medicine
Ask the clinic whether to take your usual morning pills before the draw or after it.
Write the number down
Keep each result with its date. A trend across visits says more than one value.
Prediabetes04
What are the prediabetes numbers?
The prediabetes numbers are an A1C of 5.7-6.4%, a fasting glucose of 100-125 mg/dL or a 2-hour OGTT of 140-199 mg/dL (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Prediabetes means glucose runs higher than normal but has not reached the diabetes range. It rarely causes symptoms, so a blood test is usually the only way to find it.
It is common. The CDC estimates that 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and that 40.1 million people in the country had diabetes in 2023 (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report).
A warning light
A prediabetes result is a signal to act, not a diagnosis of diabetes. Many people bring their numbers back down.
One range, three doors
You can land in prediabetes on any one of the three tests. Your doctor may order a second test type to compare.
Check again yearly
Ask how often to retest. A yearly A1C is a common plan, but your doctor sets it.
Confirming05
Does one high blood sugar reading mean you have diabetes?
No, one high reading does not mean you have diabetes. NIDDK says a diagnosis needs confirmation, usually a repeat test on another day (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
A home meter is useful for tracking, but it is not a diagnostic test. Fingertip readings can drift, and timing after meals changes them a lot.
Some signs point to high blood sugar and deserve a prompt visit, whatever your last number was (CDC, Symptoms of Diabetes):
- Peeing often and feeling very thirsty
- Hunger that does not ease, or weight loss you did not plan
- Tiredness and blurry vision
- Slow-healing sores, or numb or tingling feet
Bring any recent readings to that visit.

See packsToo low06
What blood sugar number is too low?
For many people with diabetes, a blood sugar under 70 mg/dL is too low and needs fast carbohydrate right away (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).
Lows mostly happen to people who use insulin, a sulfonylurea or a meglitinide. People without diabetes rarely drop that far.
The fix is 15-20 grams of fast carbohydrate, such as juice or glucose tablets, and a recheck after 15 minutes (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). Signs, the 15-15 step and when to call 911 are laid out in supplements and diabetes medicines.
Some ingredients, chromium among them, may add to diabetes medicines and make a low more likely (NIH ODS, Chromium). Tell your care team before adding anything new.
What helps07
What helps bring prediabetes numbers back toward normal?
Steady activity and modest weight loss help most. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, a lifestyle plan cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
The DPP lifestyle group aimed for 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of activity a week. In people 60 and older the drop in risk reached 71%. Metformin lowered the risk by 31% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
The CDC puts the target at a 5-7% weight loss. For a 200-pound person, that is 10 to 14 pounds (CDC, Prediabetes).
Where supplements fit
No supplement has matched those results. NCCIH finds no reliable evidence that an herbal product helps control diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement in drops, with 7 mcg of chromium and a small herbal blend. It is not a treatment and does not replace the plan your doctor gives you. Keep taking prescribed medicine.
The category is explained in what blood sugar support means, and the chromium line in chromium picolinate.

Tracking08
How should you track blood sugar numbers between checkups?
Track blood sugar numbers by keeping lab results in one dated list and, if your doctor asks for it, a simple home meter log.
Lab values drive decisions. Home readings fill the gaps and show how meals, sleep and activity move your glucose day to day.
Ask your doctor which numbers to watch and how often.
- Each lab visit
Write down the A1C or fasting value, the date and any change in medicine.
- Between visits
If you use a meter, note the time and whether you had eaten. Bring the log along.
- Before anything new
Before starting a supplement, tell your doctor and keep logging so any change shows up.
If insulin resistance came up at your last visit, insulin resistance basics explains what it means. The product itself is covered on the Glyco Defender home page.
FAQ09
Blood sugar number questions
What is a normal blood sugar level after eating?
For people without diabetes, the standard lab check after a sugar load is the 2-hour OGTT, where a result below 140 mg/dL counts as normal. Readings rise after meals and fall back within a few hours. Ask your doctor what range fits you.
Is a fasting glucose of 105 mg/dL prediabetes?
Yes, a fasting glucose of 105 mg/dL falls in the NIDDK prediabetes range of 100-125 mg/dL. One result is not a diagnosis, so your doctor will usually repeat the test or check an A1C before naming it. Ask what the next step should be.
Is an A1C of 5.8% bad?
An A1C of 5.8% sits in the prediabetes range of 5.7-6.4%. It is a signal to act, not a crisis, and steady habits can help keep it from climbing. Activity and modest weight loss lowered type 2 diabetes risk by 58% in the Diabetes Prevention Program.
How often should A1C ranges be checked?
Your doctor sets the schedule. People in the normal range may test every few years, people with prediabetes often once a year, and people with diabetes more often. A1C reflects about three months, so testing more often than that adds little.
Can a blood sugar supplement change my A1C?
No supplement is a reliable way to change an A1C. Chromium trials in diabetes found only slight drops of unclear importance, and the ADA finds no supplement shown to improve glucose control. Lifestyle change and prescribed medicine are what move the number.
Are prediabetes numbers different for older adults?
No, the NIDDK prediabetes numbers are the same for adults of every age: A1C 5.7-6.4% or fasting glucose 100-125 mg/dL. Older adults gained even more from lifestyle change in the Diabetes Prevention Program, with a 71% lower risk. Your doctor sets the plan.
Is a home meter reading the same as a lab fasting glucose?
No. A home meter uses a fingertip drop and is meant for tracking, not diagnosis. Lab fasting glucose comes from a vein draw. Bring your meter log to checkups so your doctor can compare it with lab results and spot any drift.
