Panax Ginseng vs American Ginseng: What Is in the Drops?

Quick answer

Panax ginseng vs American ginseng is a split between two root species: Panax ginseng, also called Asian ginseng, and Panax quinquefolius. Glyco Defender lists Panax ginseng root, 12th in the blend, so one dropper holds at most about 1.3 mg. Blood sugar trials used about 100 mg a day or more.

Two species01

What is the difference between Panax ginseng and American ginseng?

Panax ginseng vs American ginseng comes down to species: Panax ginseng is the Asian root, and American ginseng is Panax quinquefolius, a relative from North America.

Both belong to the genus Panax, which is why they share a first name. Siberian ginseng, or eleuthero, is a different plant and a separate line on our label.

Shoppers meet the names on tea bags, capsules and drinks. A label that says only ginseng does not tell you the species, so check for the Latin name in brackets.

Our bottle is clear. It lists Panax ginseng root, 12th of the 21 blend ingredients. American ginseng is not on the label.

On the sales page02

Does the sales page show the ginseng root?

Yes, the sales page shows a brand photo of Panax ginseng root, one of six whole-plant photos. The drops contain a small extract, not the root.

The photos help you picture the plants. They do not show an amount, a result or a person.

Photos are brand images from the sales page. Roots in a photo say nothing about what one dropper holds.

The research03

What do ginseng trials say about blood sugar?

A review of 16 randomized trials with 770 people found ginseng of the genus Panax cut fasting glucose by about 5.6 mg/dL, with no clear change in A1C (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014). Daily doses ranged from about 100 mg to 20 g.

Results varied a lot between studies. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health calls research on Asian ginseng and blood sugar inconclusive and conflicting (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

The reviews group the genus together, so they cannot tell you that one species beats the other. Anyone claiming a clear winner is going past the evidence we read, and we found no trial that pits the two species against each other.

Medicine comes first

Ginseng might lower blood sugar, may affect clotting and may interact with some medicines. Keep taking prescribed medicine and tell your doctor or pharmacist before adding it (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

Dose math04

How much Panax ginseng is in one dropper of Glyco Defender?

One dropper holds at most about 1.3 mg of Panax ginseng root, since it is 12th and the blend weighs 15.47 mg (15.47 divided by 12). An even split would be 0.74 mg.

The label shows ingredients from most to least (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). That order is what gives the ceiling.

A 30 mL bottle holds at most about 39 mg in total. That is under half of the lowest trial day. Read the Panax ginseng page, or the maca root notes, which cover the first line on the label.

Should the ginseng species decide which pack you buy?

No, the ginseng species should not decide your pack, because the drops hold a tiny amount of either. Decide on the whole label, the price per day and the 60-day guarantee. The drops are not a medicine, and this post is not advice for any condition.

Daily cost runs from about $2.97 on one bottle to about $1.63 on six. A supplement sits beside food and habits, and results are personal and uncertain.

Before you take it

Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you use insulin, a sulfonylurea or another glucose-lowering drug, a blood thinner, blood pressure or heart-rhythm medicine, an antidepressant or thyroid medicine. Chromium, gymnema and ginseng may add to diabetes medicines and cause lows; guarana and green tea add caffeine. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

FAQ06

Glyco Defender questions people ask

Is Asian ginseng the same as Panax ginseng?

Yes, Asian ginseng is the common name for Panax ginseng. It differs from American ginseng, which is Panax quinquefolius, and from Siberian ginseng, which is a separate plant. Glyco Defender lists Panax ginseng root.

Does American ginseng keep you awake like Asian ginseng?

We found no source that ranks the two species on sleep. NIH says insomnia is the most common side effect of Asian ginseng. If sleep is a worry, the sleep article on this blog covers timing.

Is there American ginseng in Glyco Defender?

No. The label lists Panax ginseng root as the 12th blend ingredient and does not name American ginseng. Its single amount is hidden, but the order caps it at about 1.3 mg per mL.

What does the Latin name on a ginseng label tell you?

The Latin name tells you the species. Panax ginseng means Asian ginseng, and Panax quinquefolius means American ginseng. A label with only the word ginseng leaves the species open, so check before comparing products.
