Capsaicin Metabolism: Does Cayenne Really Speed It Up?
Capsaicin metabolism effects are real but small. Capsaicin is the compound that makes cayenne hot, and Memorial Sloan Kettering says its thermogenic and appetite effects are small (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)). In a 12-week trial, 2 to 4 mg a day did not change weight significantly (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss). One Glyco Defender dropper holds at most 1.5 mg of cayenne fruit.

The spice01
What does capsaicin do to metabolism?
Capsaicin gives the body a short, small heat response. Memorial Sloan Kettering calls the thermogenic and appetite effects of cayenne small (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).
Thermogenic means heat-producing. After a spicy meal you may feel warm and sweaty, and the body spends a little extra energy.
That little extra is the root of the metabolism claim. A bump that fades within hours is not the same as a lasting change in weight.
Sloan Kettering also notes one cited study pointing to higher insulin and lower blood glucose. It says this support is thin (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).
The numbers02
Does capsaicin help with weight loss?
Capsaicin has not been shown to help with weight loss. In a 12-week trial reviewed by the NIH, 2 to 4 mg a day did not change weight significantly (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss).
The same fact sheet lists capsaicin among weight aids with weak evidence. Hot sauce at dinner is fine, but it is no plan.
Worked example: the trial used 2 to 4 mg of pure capsaicin each day. A single dropper of the drops holds at most 1.5 mg of whole cayenne fruit extract, and only part of that is capsaicin. The dropper cannot reach the trial range, even at its ceiling.
That matters because a dose that fails at full strength has little room to work at a fraction of it.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Capsaicin dose in the 12-week trial | 2 to 4 mg a day |
| Weight result | No significant change |
| Cayenne fruit place on the label | 10th of 21 |
| Most cayenne per 1 mL dropper | about 1.5 mg |
| Capsaicin share of that cayenne | Not published |
Cayenne fruit is the whole pepper extract. Only part of it is capsaicin, so the true capsaicin in a dropper is below 1.5 mg.
Plant photos03
What do the brand ingredient photos tell you?
The brand photos show whole plants, and no pepper photo is among them. They show what a few other blend ingredients look like before extraction.
Cayenne is tenth on the list, so it would not be the star of any photo. Peppers also lose heat when dried and extracted, which is another reason a picture says little about the bottle. The drops hold only small extract amounts of each plant.

Does cayenne have side effects or drug interactions?
Yes. Cayenne can irritate the stomach, and Memorial Sloan Kettering says it may increase cough with ACE-inhibitor blood pressure drugs (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).
People with acid reflux or a sensitive gut often notice hot spice first, and the same care applies to a supplement. The label does not say how much pepper is inside.
It may also affect other blood pressure medicines. At one dropper the amount is very small, but the label cannot show how small.
- Tell your pharmacist if you take an ACE inhibitor.
- Stop and call a doctor for lasting stomach pain.
- Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor about any supplement you add.

Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you use insulin, a sulfonylurea or another glucose-lowering drug, a blood thinner, blood pressure or heart-rhythm medicine, an antidepressant or thyroid medicine. Chromium, gymnema and ginseng may add to diabetes medicines and cause lows; guarana and green tea add caffeine. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
FAQ06
Glyco Defender questions people ask
Is capsaicin the same as cayenne pepper?
Capsaicin is the hot compound inside cayenne and other chili peppers. Cayenne fruit extract holds capsaicin along with many other plant compounds, so a label line for cayenne does not tell you the capsaicin amount.
Can eating hot peppers burn more calories?
Only a little, and only for a short time. Memorial Sloan Kettering calls the thermogenic effect small (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)). It will not replace food choices, movement or sleep.
Why do some supplements add cayenne at all?
Marketers add it because hot pepper produces a mild warm feeling and has a long history in diet products. The warm feeling is real, but the effect on weight is small and unproven (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss).
Is capsaicin safe with blood pressure medicine?
It may not be. Sloan Kettering says cayenne may increase cough with ACE-inhibitor drugs and may affect other blood pressure medicines (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)). Ask your pharmacist about your exact drug.
