African Mango Weight Loss Evidence: What the Trials Found
African mango weight loss evidence is limited: the best-known trial gave 150 mg before lunch and dinner to 102 adults for 10 weeks, and reviewers call most studies small and poorly designed. Glyco Defender lists African mango seed second in its blend, so one dropper holds at most about 7.7 mg, a small fraction of that trial dose.

The trials01
What does the African mango weight loss evidence actually say?
The African mango weight loss evidence is thin. One trial of 102 adults used 150 mg before lunch and dinner, or 300 mg a day, for 10 weeks (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss).
The NIH fact sheet on weight loss supplements calls the trials small and the evidence limited (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss). Memorial Sloan Kettering goes further and says most studies are small and of poor methodology (MSKCC, Irvingia gabonensis (African mango)).
Human data on blood sugar are limited too. A story of strong results is therefore a story that outruns the research.
The sales page promises help with "the stubborn weight around the middle". The evidence we read does not back that line for African mango.
Dose math02
How much African mango is in one dropper of Glyco Defender?
One dropper holds at most about 7.7 mg of African mango seed extract, since it is second in a 15.47 mg blend. The trial dose was 300 mg a day, about 39 times more.
The label lists blend ingredients from most to least (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), so the second line cannot exceed 15.47 divided by 2. An even split would give about 0.74 mg.
| Measure | Amount | Compared with 300 mg |
|---|---|---|
| Trial day (150 mg twice) | 300 mg | Baseline |
| Most one dropper can hold | About 7.7 mg | About 39 times less |
| Even split | About 0.74 mg | About 400 times less |
| Most a 30 mL bottle can hold | About 231 mg | Under one trial day |
The label footnote says African mango comes from a 10:1 concentrate. That describes the raw seed used to make the extract, not a larger dose.
Safety notes03
What side effects and cautions come with African mango?
Reported African mango side effects are gas, headache and trouble sleeping, and one case of kidney failure needing dialysis has been reported (MSKCC, Irvingia gabonensis (African mango)).
The cases are few, and cause and effect are not settled. Still, they are the reason to ask a pharmacist before any new supplement.
Common reports
Gas, headache and poor sleep appear in the source list.
Rare report
One kidney failure case that needed dialysis was reported.
Diabetes drugs
Rat studies hint at an added glucose effect; the human relevance is not determined.
Keep taking prescribed medicine and tell your doctor or pharmacist about any supplement. Do not change a diabetes drug because of a supplement.

See packsJudging claims04
How do you judge an African mango weight loss claim?
Judge an African mango claim by asking whether a human trial tested that dose, that form and that group. The FTC expects health claims to rest on relevant, reliable human studies (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
A trial of one extract at 300 mg does not stand behind a product with a hidden, much smaller amount. The same logic applies to our drops, and we say so plainly.
- Find the dose in the study and the dose on the label.
- Check the trial length; 10 weeks says little about a year.
- Look for the word "extract" and the ratio, not just the plant name.
The African mango page lists the label line in full, and the guarana and coffee post covers the caffeine side of the blend.

Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you use insulin, a sulfonylurea or another glucose-lowering drug, a blood thinner, blood pressure or heart-rhythm medicine, an antidepressant or thyroid medicine. Chromium, gymnema and ginseng may add to diabetes medicines and cause lows; guarana and green tea add caffeine. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
FAQ06
Glyco Defender questions people ask
Does African mango help you lose weight?
The evidence is limited. The trial we cite gave 300 mg a day to 102 adults for 10 weeks, and reviewers call most studies small and weak. It is not proven, and the drops hold far less.
What is the difference between African mango and regular mango?
African mango, Irvingia gabonensis, is a different tree from the common mango, and the seed is the part used in supplements. The Glyco Defender label lists African mango seed, not the fruit you eat.
Is African mango safe with diabetes medicine?
Memorial Sloan Kettering lists antidiabetic drugs as a caution, based on rat studies of a possible added glucose effect. Human relevance is not determined, so ask a pharmacist before combining them.
How many mg of African mango are in a bottle of Glyco Defender?
The label does not say. The ingredient order caps African mango at about 231 mg for the whole 30 mL bottle, and an even split would be about 22 mg. Both are under one 300 mg trial day.
