Green Tea Extract Safety: What to Know About the Liver
Green tea extract safety is mostly a liver question. NIH says liver injury has been reported with green tea products, mainly extracts in tablet or capsule form, and that it is uncommon. Glyco Defender lists green tea leaf seventh in its blend, so one dropper holds at most about 2.2 mg of extract. Tea as a drink is a different thing.

The concern01
Can green tea extract harm the liver?
Yes, in rare cases. Liver injury has been reported in some people using green tea products, mainly extracts in tablet or capsule form, and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health calls it uncommon (NCCIH, Green Tea).
The NIH weight loss fact sheet also links green tea catechin extracts to liver injury (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss). Both sources point at concentrated extracts, not at tea in a cup.
Green tea contains caffeine, and at high doses it lowers blood levels of the beta-blocker nadolol (NCCIH, Green Tea). Those are the two cautions that come up again and again.
Rare is not never. That is why the question is worth a plain answer before a purchase.
Three forms02
Is a cup of green tea the same as green tea extract?
No. A 12-oz cup of green tea has about 37 mg of caffeine, while the safety reports involve concentrated extracts in pills (FDA, Caffeine in common drinks) (NCCIH, Green Tea). The drops sit between the two in form, and far below both in amount.
The strength differs by an order of magnitude from one form to the next, which is why advice about drinking tea does not carry over to pills.
| Form | What is known |
|---|---|
| Brewed tea, 12 oz | About 37 mg caffeine; liver reports center on extracts, not tea |
| Extract pill or capsule | Rare liver injury reported (NCCIH, Green Tea) |
| Glyco Defender drops | Green tea leaf, 7th of 21 blend lines; at most about 2.2 mg per mL |
Dose math03
How much green tea extract is in one dropper of Glyco Defender?
One dropper holds at most about 2.2 mg of green tea leaf extract, since it is seventh in a 15.47 mg blend (15.47 divided by 7). An even split would give about 0.74 mg.
The label lists blend ingredients from most to least (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)) and prints no single amount. A whole 30 mL bottle holds at most about 66 mg of green tea extract.
That small ceiling lowers the concern, but it cannot remove it. The extract note on the label reads 20:1, which describes how much leaf went into the extract and does not make the 2.2 mg larger.
We found no trial of the drops, and no source that sets a liver-safe level for a blend like this. We would rather say so than guess.

What should you do if you use green tea products?
If you use green tea products, tell your doctor, keep to the label dose and stop and call a clinician if you notice signs of liver trouble such as yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or ongoing belly pain.
- Do not stack several green tea products, since extracts add up.
- Count the caffeine from tea, coffee and soda together.
- Tell your pharmacist if you take nadolol or another prescription.
- Take no more than one dropperful a day, as the label says.
Keep taking prescribed medicine and tell your doctor about any supplement. People with liver disease or a history of liver problems should ask before use. See side effects and green tea and guarana.
Another line with its own cautions is covered in licorice and blood pressure.

Is Glyco Defender a good fit if you worry about the liver?
If you worry about your liver, ask your doctor before you order, since the label gives no liver-specific safety data. The 60-day guarantee covers every pack if you decide it is not for you.
Daily cost runs from about $2.97 on one bottle to about $1.63 on six. A supplement is not a medicine, and results are personal and uncertain.

Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you use insulin, a sulfonylurea or another glucose-lowering drug, a blood thinner, blood pressure or heart-rhythm medicine, an antidepressant or thyroid medicine. Chromium, gymnema and ginseng may add to diabetes medicines and cause lows; guarana and green tea add caffeine. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
FAQ06
Glyco Defender questions people ask
Is green tea extract safe to take every day?
We cannot call it risk-free. Rare liver injury has been reported with extract pills, and caffeine adds up. Daily use is a question for a clinician. The Glyco Defender label allows one dropperful a day.
Does drinking green tea carry the same liver risk as extract pills?
The NIH reports we read tie liver injury mainly to extracts in tablet or capsule form, not to brewed tea. A 12-oz cup holds about 37 mg of caffeine. Still, ask your doctor if you have liver disease.
What is the caffeine in green tea compared with Glyco Defender?
A 12-oz green tea has about 37 mg of caffeine, per FDA. Glyco Defender prints no caffeine figure; green tea leaf is capped at about 2.2 mg of extract per dropper, so any caffeine from it is small.
Can green tea extract interact with medicine?
Yes, in at least one known case. At high doses, green tea lowers blood levels of the beta-blocker nadolol. Ask a pharmacist about any prescription before adding a green tea product.
