How to Read a Blood Sugar Supplement Label in 5 Minutes
How to read a blood sugar supplement label: start with the Supplement Facts box, then check serving size, each amount, any blend total, other ingredients and the cautions. Front claims come last. A label shows what is inside, but it cannot show whether the product works, because no supplement is approved before sale.

Where to look01
Where do you start on a supplement label?
Start at the Supplement Facts box on the back, not the front. The front is advertising; the box is the part the law shapes.
Read in this order: serving size, servings per container, each ingredient with its amount, any blend, other ingredients, then the cautions.
Glyco Defender is a useful example because its label lists every ingredient. It shows a serving of 1 mL, 30 servings, chromium at 7 mcg and a 15.47 mg blend of 21 items.
The facts box02
What should the Supplement Facts box tell you?
The Supplement Facts box should tell you the serving size, the amount of each ingredient and what percent of the Daily Value it meets.
Then compare each amount with the dose used in research. A listed ingredient is not always a meaningful amount.
| Check | What to look for | Glyco Defender label |
|---|---|---|
| Serving | Size and count | 1 mL, 30 servings |
| Single amounts | A number beside each item | Chromium 7 mcg only |
| Blend | Total weight, order of items | 15.47 mg, 21 items |
| Other ingredients | Sweeteners, allergens | Includes xylitol |
| Cautions | Who should not use it | Under 18, pregnant, nursing |

Blend math03
What does a proprietary blend hide on the label?
A proprietary blend hides the amount of each ingredient. The law lets a company print only the blend total and list the items from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).
You can still do the math. Glyco Defender lists 21 items in 15.47 mg. Split evenly, each gets about 0.74 mg. Because the list runs from most to least, the third item can hold at most 15.47 divided by 3, or about 5.2 mg.
Those ceilings sit far below the amounts in trials. For example, gymnema was studied at 200 to 400 mg of extract (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). One dropper holds at most about 1.9 mg of it.

Which claims near the label deserve a second look?
Claims that promise a result for blood sugar deserve a second look, because no supplement is proven to treat diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).
The FTC says health claims need solid human evidence that fits the exact product, dose and users (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). A study of one ingredient does not cover a blend. Compare each sales claim with the label below.
- Sales headline“The Liquid Blood-Sugar Support Adults Over 40 Are Switching To”No trial has tested Glyco Defender, and no count of buyers is published. No supplement treats diabetes, and NCCIH warns against swapping care for one. (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements) (FDA, Illegally Sold Diabetes Treatments)
- Energy copyWorks “without stimulant jitters”Guarana (4th in the blend) and green tea (7th) are caffeine sources, and no caffeine amount is printed. At these tiny blend shares the caffeine is likely small, but it is not zero. (MSKCC, Guarana) (FDA, Caffeine: how much is too much?)
- Formula count“20 research-informed botanicals and nutrients”The label lists 21 blend ingredients plus chromium: 22 lines, several of them amino acids rather than botanicals. (Glyco Defender sales page)
- Cravings copyHelps “tame everyday cravings”Gymnema can dull sweet taste on the tongue at studied doses of 200-400 mg; one dropper holds at most about 1.9 mg of it. (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph)
- Weight copy“the stubborn weight around the middle”African mango, forskolin, raspberry ketone and capsaicin have weak or no weight evidence alone, per NIH. (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss)
- Science sectionChromium and gymnema study quotes, with journal and agency logosThe quoted studies tested single ingredients at far higher doses, not this product. The page itself says the logos are not endorsements. (NIH ODS, Chromium) (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance)
- BottleNo support claim on the front; the FDA statement on the facts panelThe label is plainer than the sales page. A supplement may carry structure/function claims only with that statement. (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements)
Claims as printed on the sales page (Glyco Defender sales page) and the label. Health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, relevant to the product (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
Blood sugar supplements are not a swap for prescribed medicine. Keep taking what your doctor ordered and tell them about any supplement you add.

Glyco Defender is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you use insulin, a sulfonylurea or another glucose-lowering drug, a blood thinner, blood pressure or heart-rhythm medicine, an antidepressant or thyroid medicine. Chromium, gymnema and ginseng may add to diabetes medicines and cause lows; guarana and green tea add caffeine. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
FAQ06
Glyco Defender questions people ask
What is the first thing to check when reading a supplement label for blood sugar?
Check the serving size and how many servings the bottle holds. Every amount on the label is per serving, so a wrong guess about the serving makes every other number wrong. Glyco Defender lists 1 mL and 30 servings per bottle.
Does a long ingredient list mean a blood sugar supplement is stronger?
No. A long list can mean each item is tiny. Glyco Defender lists 21 blend items in 15.47 mg, which is about 0.74 mg each if split evenly. Ask what the amount is, not how many names there are.
Can a label tell me if a supplement is tested for purity?
Not by itself. A label can name a testing group or a facility, but you should check the group's own site. A seal also does not promise that a product is safe or effective.
Why does the label say the statement has not been evaluated by the FDA?
Federal rules require that line beside many supplement claims (21 CFR 101.93 (eCFR)). It means FDA did not review the claim before sale. It is a reason to ask for evidence, not a sign of a problem by itself.
